Engine Kit

So what is a engine kit!!

An engine kit is a combination of parts used to rebuild and or recondition an engine.

Every time you start your engine you have parts that move up and down as well as other parts that are rotating in a circle. Any movement of this engine will result in wear and tear on all engine components involved.

The parts that are worn by everyday driving include pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, gaskets, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, timing chains and or belts, flywheel, transmission, valves, springs, retainers, locks rocker arms, push rods any and or all moving parts of the engine. After a certain amount of wear you will end up with excessive clearance resulting in anything from a click or a knock to an all out engine failure.

To fix the wear that has happened to an engine over the years you rebuild or recondition the engine with new components. you will re-use your core parts like the cylinder heads, crankshaft, connecting rods etc. You will need to take these components to a local machine shop and have them checked to see what size parts you need to order in your engine kit.

The sizes that you need to know will be the rod and main bearing size as well as the bore size. The Crankshaft is one of the items that will be machined by your machine shop if it has to much wear to run with standard size components. If it has to much wear and the journals are out of round or worn the machine shop will grind a small amount of metal off the journals to make them round again. This is usually done in increments of .010 thousandths of an inch.

The other area is the cylinder bore of the block. If you cylinders have to much wear in them due to the piston and rings going up and down the cylinder for several hundred thousand miles the only way you can get your new pistons and rings to work without extra oil consumption or ticking noises from the piston slapping back and forth in the cylinder is to bore the cylinder to the next size piston. Boring the cylinder will make the cylinder round again and restore the piston to cylinder wall clearance back to the same specifications as it was when the engine was new. The most common oversize's for pistons are .020, .030, .040 and .060. Ask you machine shop to check your cylinders to make sure that they are straight and round, if they are not you need to have the cylinders bored and honed in order to attain the proper clearances for the pistons.

Attention!!
If you are not boring your cylinders you still need to have them honed so that you have a fresh cross hatch pattern in the cylinders for your new rings to seat to.
